ENTER THE DRAGON... Chinese Dragon Boat Challenge that will take place on Saturday, 14th September in Westmeath, Ireland.Oxfam, Grow and Denny challenge everyone to enter the Denny Chinese Dragon Boat Challenge that will take place on Saturday, 14th September on the shores of Lough Ree, in Athlone, Co. Westmeath.
Inspired by a Chinese tradition, the Dragon Boat Challenge is a unique boat racing competition in which crews of 11 compete with each other in a series of 200m races.
Last year's winners, the Blue Tooth crew from Ericsson Dun Laoghaire said:
"It was a thoroughly enjoyable event. Competition was high, but victory was ours!! We'll be back again this year to defend our title"
To win the much/coveted Dragon Boat Trophy, you will compete with teams from all over the country, and you will of course need to beat Blue Tooth!
Funds raised through crew sponsorship will go to two charities, Oxfam's poverty alleviation and social justice programmes around the world, and Grow's "Programme of Recovery and Growth" which helps people deal with psychological issues.
"To experience a dragon boat race / either watching or participating / is a thrill in itself and can be enjoyed by everyone. You'll watch as long, multicoloured boats, with frightening dragons' heads, long tails, and scaley bodies, splash through the water. You'll see men, women and children grunt and sweat as they push themselves harder and faster to be the first to the finish line.
You'll hear the crowds screaming and cheering for their favourite team, while the drummers pound their drums and yell at the paddlers. The event is not intended to be quiet and peaceful but loud and exciting / a celebration." (Shelagh Peirce, The History Of Dragon Boat Racing."
